Why Riga Is Perfect for Incentive Travel
When companies start planning their next incentive trip, the usual suspects come up — Barcelona, Dubrovnik, Prague. Riga almost never makes the first shortlist. That’s exactly why it should.
A city that surprises
First impressions matter, and Riga delivers. Landing at a modern, efficient airport 10 minutes from the centre, your group steps into a city that manages to feel both historic and effortlessly cool. The old town — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is compact enough to walk everywhere, yet rich enough to keep even the most seasoned travellers engaged.
Then there’s the Art Nouveau district. Nowhere else in the world has such a concentrated collection of buildings from the movement — over 800 in total. Walking through the quiet streets of the quiet neighbourhood, the elaborate facades of gods, goddesses, and gargoyles staring down from every corner, is genuinely jaw-dropping.
The food scene has arrived
A few years ago, Riga’s restaurant scene was a well-kept secret. Now it’s attracting attention from across Europe. The city has embraced the New Nordic movement with distinctly Baltic ingredients — fermented dairy, foraged herbs, smoked fish, rye bread in a dozen forms — and the results are extraordinary.
For incentive groups, this translates into memorable dining experiences at every price point. A private dinner at one of the old town’s cellar restaurants. A progressive tasting evening across three addresses. A market breakfast at the famous Central Market, one of the largest in Europe, housed in a series of repurposed Zeppelin hangars.
Activities with real wow factor
Riga is one of our favourite cities to programme because the mix of activities is so diverse. On the same trip you can do a Lada Rally through the surrounding countryside in the morning, a guided Art Nouveau architecture walk in the afternoon, and a candlelit medieval banquet in a 15th-century hall in the evening. The contrast keeps energy high and leaves people with genuinely varied memories.
The city also sits at the heart of excellent day-trip territory. The Gauja National Valley — Latvia’s answer to the Swiss Alps — is 50 minutes away. The Jurmala beach resort strip is 30 minutes west. And Estonia and Lithuania are both within comfortable driving range for multi-destination programmes.
Practical reasons companies love it
- Value for money. Riga consistently delivers high-quality experiences at 20–30% less than comparable Western European cities.
- Flight connections. Direct flights from most major European hubs, with Riga airport handling over 7 million passengers annually.
- Hotel quality. A strong selection of 4- and 5-star properties in the old town and city centre, many with private event spaces.
- English. Widely spoken across the hospitality industry, so your group will never feel lost.
The DMC Baltic advantage
We have been programming Riga for over 20 years. We know which venues have the right energy for a celebration dinner and which are better for a working lunch. We know the guides who make history feel alive, the chefs who are happy to involve your group in the kitchen, and the event spaces that photographs beautifully without trying too hard.
